In the collective imagination, voodoo evokes a series of stereotypical images, such as black magic, voodoo dolls, occult rituals and the transformation of human beings into zombies. This representation, conveyed by Hollywood horror films with a high haemoglobin content, has its source in para-anthropological literature, i.e. in discourses produced by authors who wanted to inform about the mores, customs and ways of life of the populations observed, but who were not trained as ethnologists or anthropologists. Thus, in this case and in this form, vodou is much more than a system of magic-religious beliefs aimed at establishing exchanges with the invisible. It is a system of care, where the magical and religious dimensions are secondary to the therapeutic purpose.
